An intragastric balloon is a small silicone balloon filled with saline or air that fills the stomach to create a feeling of fullness. It is placed in the stomach non-surgically to promote weight loss and is usually left in place for 4-6 months. The balloon contributes to weight loss by reducing the portion size and frequency of the person's meals.
Limit alcohol intake, you are allowed to have 1 or 2 glasses of alcoholic beverage on social occasions only. Avoid high fat, high calorie foods, snacks and sugary drinks as these will not assist with weight loss. Aim to eat slowly, chew thoroughly, separate eating and drinking.
Over 30 peer-reviewed studies have been conducted worldwide to confirm that the Allurion Balloon is a safe and effective way to lose weight3. It has shown to be particularly effective in patients with a higher body mass index (BMI).
Soft foods will help your stomach adjust to the new balloon. Choose a light diet and avoid foods high in fat or those that can cause irritation. It is likely that you will only be able to tolerate very small amounts.
It is usual to suffer with nausea, abdominal pain and in some instances, vomiting for the first few days following balloon placement. This occurs because the stomach is not used to having the balloon in place. You will be given medication to help settle these symptoms.

The procedure requires our patients to meet certain criteria, such as having a body mass index (BMI) between 27 and 50, being willing to make healthy lifestyle changes and not having had previous stomach or oesophageal surgery.
The Allurion balloon will ideally not need removal, and will instead pass naturally through the gastrointestinal tract, expelling with your regular bowel movements. This should be completely painless. However, there are rare occurrences where it will be necessary to remove the balloon again after insertion.

Gastric balloons are non-surgical procedures but they are not without risk of complications (e.g. perforation, obstruction and balloon rupture).
Yes, it is possible to have the Allurion Gastric Balloon placed twice.
Yes, you can fly with a gastric balloon. Commercial aeroplanes maintain normal air pressure, which means there's no problem with travelling at high altitudes with a gastric balloon – people do it all the time.
On the Allurion Program, to help avoid reflux, we recommend that you eat early in the evening and avoid lying down soon after eating – waiting around 2-3 hours before going to bed. Propping yourself up with pillows can also help, while sleeping on your left side can help you to feel more comfortable.
